Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest inhabit the same romantic world of magic and make-believe, and show a discernible change in Shakespeare’s tone, as surprising and as innovative as Beethoven’s last quarters. In some respects the plays are more lyrical than earlier works. Savagery, duplicity and horror are there, but finally overcome by innocence, integrity and love. It is a world of extremes.
