Unpublished until the 1960s. Maksudov, an obsessed provincial loner, tries to succeed in 1920s Moscow, writing for the Independent theatre and its co-director Ivan Vasilevich - comic portraits of the actual Moscow Art theatre and the great Stanislavski with his famous "Method"
